Parent-Facing Vs Rear Facing Baby Pushchairs

The Debate:

The controversial debate of whether or not a parent facing pushchair is healthier for babies all began from research carried out through the National Literacy Trust who created "talk to your baby campaign".

What the Research Suggested:

The aim of this campaign was to encourage parents and carers to talk more to their children from birth. They believe that a baby will develop good communication and language skills if parents interact more with their babies from an early age. Their research suggests that buying a forward facing pushchair will restrict the interaction with mother and baby making the baby feel "anxious" and increase stress levels. The research concluded that a parent facing pushchair was healthier for babies because mothers are more likely to talk to their babies and interact with them.

Should Mothers be Concerned?

There are many holes in the way the research was carried out, in particular measuring stress babies felt just by their heart rate. The research concluded that in a forward facing pushchair the baby's heart rate increased which was a sign of stress. An increase in heart rate can not necessarily be taken as a sign of stress.

Whether or not a mother chooses a forward facing pushchair or a parent facing pushchair is really a matter of personal choice. Some mothers may feel it is good for their babies to explore the outside world and take in new experiences rather than constantly see their mothers face all of the time. Plus time spent at home interacting with mum and dad is far greater than time spent out and about in the pushchair, so can it really have a long term negative effect on babies' communication skills later in life, probably not.

Our Conclusion

It is a personal choice whether or not you choose a forward facing or parent facing pushchair. In the early years some mothers would want to see their baby while they are out and about whereas others would be happy for their baby to interact with world. One deciding factor may be down to budget rather than the research carried out. A parent facing pushchair will most likely be more expensive than a forward facing one.

If you are still unsure, an alternative may be to buy a 2 in 1 pushchair which will enable you to easily switch from forward to parent facing when the mood takes you. There are many different makes of 2 in 1 pushchairs and which can vary in price. Again it will depend on your budget.

We have researched various online retail shops who currently have great deals on 2 for 1 pushchairs. Mothercare are currently offering up to £140 discount off some of their 2 in 1 models. Their My Choice 4 wheeler pushchair currently has a 17% discount priced at £195. This model allows you to personalise your pushchair by choosing the seat unit and converts from pram mode to a pushchair without the use of a separate carry cot.

Mothercare have brought out a new model called the Spin Pushchair which allows you to convert from forward to parent facing in one quick spin and is suitable from birth.

Kiddies Kingdom.com is offering a 23% saving on the Sprogg Sport Pramette which is great value for money. The model comes with a built in carry cot which is suitable from birth to 6 months. Included in the price is a rain cover to help keep your baby dry. The model is available in a range of 3 colours and again can swap from forward to parent facing mode.
