Prune Juice: Baby Constipation Remedy or a Big No No?

Posted: Jul 14, 2010 |Comments: 0 | Views: 336 |

When your baby is constipated and in pain, it can be difficult to try and figure out what to do. You'll be bombarded with advice from all sides and one of the more common remedies is prune juice . . . baby constipation can be scary, but can you give prune juice to a baby?

It all depends on the age of the baby. From about three or four months, they should be able to handle it just fine. The biggest problem that you'll face is having to get them to drink it . . . most babies will find it an odd flavor. Once they are older, there's no difficulty because they have already had solid foods.

For a baby, constipation ranks right up there with baby gas. It hurts. You want to make them feel better and fast, but what can you do? There are a few ways to treat.

First, orally, you can give a gentle laxative that is meant for babies. Do not ever give a child an adult laxative without checking with a doctor. This can be very dangerous, so you need to make sure that they have something soft. If not, then a spoonful of prune juice can be stirred into a bottle of water and they can drink that down.

Babies that drink formula tend to get more constipated on a regular basis. It's not surprising considering that it is usually a cow's milk base. Make sure your baby has water every day to help keep a loose stool.

If your baby is pushing and having difficulties getting the feces out, you may wish to use a glycerin suppository. This is something that is very easy to use, it's soft and lubricated and will slide right in. Then it dissolves away and loosens the stool, making it easy for your baby to get everything out. In combination with the prune juice baby constipation remedy and water, this should work just fine to prevent more constipation.
