Often the pram is designed with the child facing the person manoeuvring it. In the US, the term "pram" is used synonymously with "pushchair", but with posh and classic undertones.
- Pushchair – This is the general or blanket term for baby carriages. The pushchair can accommodate very young infants (especially when combined with a pram) as well as older children. Its design varies depending on the age of the child. Pushchairs for infants are often designed to face the person pushing, while those for older children will be facing outward. Simply put, pushchair is the most basic prototype of all baby carriages.
- Stroller – The stroller is very similar to the pushchair, except it has additional features that make it ideal for city travelling. Strollers commonly have additional space for storing nappies, toys, or even shopping bags. Strollers are very basic, but they can be transformed or upgraded depending on the accessories added into the mix.
- Buggy – The term buggy refers to a type of pushchair that is designed to handle rough terrain much better. Buggies are commonly designed with larger wheels and are able to remain sturdy even after running through uneven terrain. Apart from these four, however, there is a new "type" of baby carriage that combines more than a few of the features stated above. This is the travel system:
- Pushchair travel system – Otherwise known as simply a "travel system", this combines several features into one package. It works as a carrycot, a pushchair and a car seat. The carrycot (or pram) is attached to a chassis to convert it into a pushchair. It can also be detached and and sar seat can be attached in its place. It's a lot of these features rolled into one, so some families opt for a travel system to get the best of, well, all worlds.
