Rear Facing Car Seats - Info You Should Know

Posted: Mar 26, 2010 |

Kids car seats which face the rear of the car are called rear facing car seats. These are the first car seats that babies has to use by law. Keep children rear facing until they are over the weight limit of the rear facing car seat, as rear facing is safest. You can tell if your child is too tall for their car seat if their head is less than an inch below the top of the seat.

Many parents can't wait to let their little one sit forward facing in the car, but what some of them don't realise is that rear facing is much safer for their child. As I have already mentioned, you should keep your child rear facing until their weight is over the seats weight limits or they are too big for their rear facing car seat. Some parents have turned their child forward facing as soon as their child is able to, but this could put their child at risk. If your child has outgrown their rear facing car seat and you cannot find another suitable car seat for them which is rear facing, then you should purchase a forward facing car seat.

Always remember not to install rear facing car seats in the front passenger seat when the passenger airbag is live. To have your child riding in their rear facing car seat in the front of the car when the airbag there is active, is against the law. Install the rear facing car seat in the rear of the car as it is the safest place for your little one. You can position the rear facing car seat in the passenger seat at the front if the airbag has been turned off. However, we do not recommend this, as the rear of the car is the best and safest place for your child.
