Round Cribs – are They Worth the Money?

Try shopping for a round crib now and you will realize that it is impossible to get one for less than $400. Comparatively, it is not difficult to get a standard crib for just $150 or even less. This means a round crib is easily two to three times more than a rectangular crib. Isn't a round crib overpriced then? It is if you can identify with its drawbacks.

Advantages Of Round Cribs

Of course, a round crib has its advantages to be able to sell at a higher price. It is more beautiful and elegant-looking with many being custom or hand-made. The round shape means it has no corners or concussion points to endanger your baby. Such a shape also helps you to save space and you can place in the center to make it the focal point of your nursery.

With 42 inches in diameter for most round cribs, they have a larger surface area that your baby would not feel crammed up in the crib compared to the narrower standard model. The risk of hitting the sides when your baby falls backwards is also lower. With an all-round view of the room, your baby may indeed have more things to catch sight of from inside a round crib.

How Big Is Your Nursery?

But a round crib is not everything good with no disadvantages. More expensive does not necessarily mean it is better or more suitable for you than a standard crib. Firstly, it is obvious that to get the full benefit of a round crib, it must be placed in the center of the room and not against a wall. Such a crib supposedly encourages visual stimulation in your baby by providing a 360-degree view of the room. Therefore, it defeats part of the purpose of a round crib if you are going to placed it alongside a wall.

You have to bear in mind that not all nurseries are big enough for a center-of-the-room positioning for a crib. Hence, if your nursery is small that it makes more sense for the crib to be tucked away in a corner, perhaps a round crib may not be worth the price.

Mobility

Secondly, an assembled standard crib may still be able to fit through your doorway and you can then push it from room to room with ease. But a round crib with 42 inches in diameter most probably won't make it out of the nursery unless you first take it apart. Hence, if you want your crib to be mobile, then a round crib may not fit into your plans.

Cost Of Crib Bedding

Thirdly, you may face a disadvantage when it comes to round crib bedding. With the increasing popularity of round cribs nowadays, you won't have problems finding crib bedding items online. But you might just end up paying more for them.

Furthermore, most round cribs come with a canopy top. Of course, you can always choose to do away with the canopy but that would take away the elegance of a round crib. So, the chances are, if you buy a round crib, you would need to fork out more money to get the drapes and dome cover as well.

Too Wide To Reach

Lastly, with a standard crib, the drop side is usually no longer used when a baby can stand. You can simply lift your child up and over the crib without the need to lower the side. Even if your baby is on the other side of the crib, you can reach him or her because of the narrow width.

But with a round crib, you can’t possibly stretch yourself to cover three and a half feet to get your baby if he or she is on the opposite side, especially if you are short in height. So, you may well end up chasing your baby in circles. Otherwise, you will need to release the drop side to reach your baby and that is where the inconvenience lies. Bear in mind that once your baby learns how to crawl and walk, you also need to take extra care when you are releasing the drop side.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a round crib may be rich-looking and beautiful, but it is not practical for everyone. It is not worth the money if it doesn’t fit into your needs and nursery floor plan. No doubt a round crib has its plus point but so does a standard crib. If you are undecided of the type of crib to buy, try making a list of the benefits and features of both the standard and round crib to help you arrive at your decision.
