Safe Play Time For Your Baby Or Toddler

Posted: Nov 18, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Babies and toddlers are curious little creatures that explore the world around them constantly, using both their hands and their mouths.  Small children are fascinated by most anything, especially bright, colorful and textured toys.  Babies and toddlers will also play with things not intended for him or her to touch which could harm your child.  Below are some things to do to keep your child safe during play time.

1.  Buy only age appropriate toys for your child.  Just because it's cute and doesn't appear harmful doesn't mean it's a good choice if it's intended for a child more than a couple months older than your baby.  While the toy may in fact not harm your child, it's quite possible the child will not understand the use of the toy and become frustrated.

2.  Purchase toys free of toxic materials.  This may seem obvious, but it won't hurt to read the label before you buy.

3.  Do not buy products with small pieces for children under 3.  Most toys have a label if it has small pieces but you should still examine what is included in the box.  As mentioned, children explore with their mouths and some objects are choking hazards.

4.  Purchase only well-made, durable toys.  Children don't always use toys for their intended reasons and may test the durability of a toy.  There is a risk of harm to a child when a toy breaks.

5.  Be sure your baby or toddler is in a safe place when playing.  Portable play-pens, cribs, a play area free furniture with sharp edges and baby's room are probably safe options for play time.

6.  Keep baby's toys and play area clean.  Periodically all toys and stuffed animals should be washed. Some can go in the dishwasher or washing machine while others will need hand washing.

Being mindful of baby's surroundings, the things baby has to play with, and using a little common sense should insure that your child enjoys plenty of safe play time.
