There are times when getting ready to go out for the day with your baby seems more like a complicated mission than an enjoyable excursion. There are so many things to remember and carry with you – food, water, spare nappies, baby wipes and more – it feels like it takes hours just trying to get out of the front door.

The key to ensuring nothing gets forgotten is to invest in a baby change bag, which will allow you to put everything you need in one convenient place, ready for when you need it.

The best changing bags have many different compartments to store things away in, so make sure you choose one which can accommodate all your requirements. Lay out all the items you need to have with you when you travel anywhere with your baby – you might be surprised just how many things there are.

When you bear all these things in mind, it’s no wonder that a baby changing bag can be quite heavy. For this reason it’s important to make sure the bag is ideal for you as well as fulfilling all your baby’s needs. Rucksack style bags are a popular choice as they typically have padded straps, making them much more comfortable to wear even when they are heavy. They also allow you to keep both hands free to look after your baby, carry them or push the buggy.

When you get a new change bag, spend some time organising baby’s essentials inside it so they are easy to get at when needed. It might sound silly but it’s far easier to experiment with where to put everything in the comfort of your own home than waiting until you are in the middle of a packed shopping centre with a screaming baby on your hands, who’s desperate for a fresh nappy.

Keep things you’re liable to need more often, such as nappies and nappy bags within easy reach near the top of the bag. Other items that aren’t needed as often, such as a spare set of clothes for example, can be kept at the bottom of the bag. Once you develop a system that works for you and your baby, life will be far easier, as you’ll be able to grab your changing bag in a hurry if need be, safe in the knowledge that everything you need is inside.

One final tip – whenever you return from a day out, take a few minutes to repack the changing bag in readiness for your next day out. That way nothing will get forgotten and you won’t get caught short when you’re out and about in future. Find a permanent home for the bag in your house (near the front door is ideal) and you won’t have to search for it in a hurry either.
