Tips For Using a Breastpump at Work

Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience for mothers and infants alike. Not only is it the healthiest way possible to feed your baby and add antibodies to his diet, it is also a wonderful way to create a bond between the two of you. While some mothers and babies have difficulty in the beginning of finding the right nursing position and the proper latch on technique, most mothers are reluctant to stop breastfeeding when their maternity leave from work comes to an end.

Most women find that they are just getting comfortable in breastfeeding their baby at the end of the six week period. Although doubtful, many mothers give in to formula feeding for one main reason; hesitances to use a breast pump. However, pumping your breasts during the day and allowing your baby to nurse at night can too be a pleasant experience for both mother and child.

One main concern that many breastfeeding mothers have when returning to work is privacy. It may not always be possible to have an office or room to yourself to pump. However, many breast pumps are equipped with car adaptors.

If there are no options for pumping within your building, then you may want to consider using your car as a pumping station. Another major concern for many mothers going back to work after maternity leave is time. Mothers worry about when they will have time during their workday to use a breast pump. Lunch break is the most common time for women to pump their breasts.

Many women find that bringing a sandwich for lunch and eating while pumping works best. It is likely that you will have a little time left over for socializing or carrying out your normal lunchtime routines.

Be certain to invest the extra money in an electric double breast pump. Pumping both breasts at one time is much faster than using single or manual pumps. Pumping harnesses are also good for keeping your hands free. If another time during the day is not available, discuss your concerns with your boss. It is likely that he or she will allow you another opportunity during the day.

Milk storage can also be an issue for working women who breastfeed their babies. Breast milk can be left at room temperature for a short amount of time. However, it is best to store the milk in dated storage bags and place them in a cool location. If you have the space, a mini refrigerator is a wise investment. Simply store the milk until the end of the day and carry it home at night. If you work on the road and cannot use a refrigerator, many pumps include an insulated section for milk storage.

Place a couple of ice packs into these insulated locations or coolers and store your milk there. Once at home, place the milk in the refrigerator or freezer. Breastfeeding does not need to end when you return to work. Many mothers have much success in using a breast pump at work. While much good advice is available from experienced moms, the best policy is to find a routine and location in which you are comfortable. Once these are established, pumping will come with ease.
