What Food Should Parents Avoid Feeding Their Toddlers?

Posted: Sep 02, 2010 |

Why should a parent or carer avoid giving a child certain food groups?

It is important to watch out for allergic reactions. Some children can have an allergic reaction from eating certain food types. If a baby is given a type of food too early, an allergic reaction may result.

What are the signs of an allergic reaction?

If the child's skin shows itchy red patches, if they begin vomiting or have bouts of diarrhoea then you need to take them to the hospital right away.
What food should one be careful feeding a child for the first time?
1) Sugar - Sugary foods or adding sugar to food is unnecessary and unhealthy. Vegetables and fruit have natural sugars. Natural sugar is sufficient, they do not need any more added to their food.
2) Salt - Adding salt or salty foods are unhealthy for a child. Salty foods make extra work for the child's kidneys.
3) Nuts - Do not feed your child nuts, they may choke on them or have an allergic reaction.
4) Eggs - Children should not have eggs during their first year or products that have eggs in.
5) Cow's milk - There is too much protein in cow's milk for babies. They should not drink it during their first year. Skimmed milk should also be avoided as children need the fat in whole milk.
6) Citrus fruits - A babies stomach can easily become upset when they eat citrus fruits. Also the seeds should always be removed from fruits.
7) Shellfish - Wait until your child is at least two years old before feeding them any shellfish.
8) Raw food and seeds - Raw food should be avoided due to choking hazards, along with seeds and hard pieces of food.
