What's With Lullabies?

Posted: Feb 02, 2012 |Comments: 0 |

Singsongs to calm him down and lullabies to put him to sleep have always existed and we know this even by ancient writings. Maybe the person that invented a lullaby never even really existed. Every mother knows how to make up a loving lullaby that springs directly from the depth of her heart, overflowing with love for her child. Even lullabies sung in musical books exist, in dolls and music CDs for children, they are all lovely and useful to enrich the repertoire of bedtime routine. But, none of them are as beautiful and unique as the one that every mother dedicates to her child in the peacefulness of his room.

A tradition that is so simple and antique like lullabies becomes a prodigious mix of well-being for a small child. In fact it unites the elements that give newborns and small children safety: a mother's warm hug, the smell that the child has learned to know, her sweet voice that, whispered in the semi-darkness, sounds like an echo that the child could hear when he was in her uterus. And the rhythm, slow and measured, sounds like the regular pulse of his mother's heart and the pace of her walking, through which a woman would cradle her child carrying him inside of her. This entirety of circumstances create intense pleasure to the child that comes from the sensation of being safe and being with the most important person to him: his mommy.

So let's dedicate all the necessary time to sing lullabies for your child: even if we are off-key, our voice for him will be the sweetest of melodies. Fix his PJs, turn the lights down, soften the noises of the house and completely dedicate yourself to your child. Whisper the ancient lullaby that we learned from our mothers or grandmothers, or make up a new one, that's ours. Hold the baby in your arms, sweetly cradling him and then put him in his bed as you continue to sing: he will feel reassured, still being near us. The sensation of serenity that comes from our voice will help the baby to relax. This will induce him to sweetly slip into a restoring sleep that will give him well-being, accompanying him in his dreams.
