In December, 1999, newspaper headlines alerted the public to news of Shaun Woodward's surprise decision to defect from the Conservative Party. Many people were concerned as they read headlines that began with such announcements as, "Blair rewards defector Woodward with a special campaigning role for the Labour Party". To better understand what this meant at the time perhaps it is best to start with what the Conservative Party represents. In essence, this party supports such things as home ownership, low personal taxation, and free-market principles. The Labour Party, on the other hand, supports the rights and interests of the working class people. When the situation surrounding Woodward's decision to defect was fully explored it seemed that he was less than pleased with the Tory Party Leadership. From concerns over gay rights to being questioned about himself and references made to his own sexual orientation, Woodward reportedly was concerned about the direction the Party was taking. Reportedly, Woodward feared that the Conservative Party was moving away from the ‘one-nation philosophies'.

In June, 2007, Woodward was appointed as the Northern Ireland Secretary. Of course the rumors will continue to be started and disputes are sure to come up now and then regarding any assistance Blair may have provided to Woodward. But in the end, Woodward has established much credibility for himself, with or without help. As for other political figures' careers that Blair may have influenced in his time; each one of these political figures should be explored on an individual basis.
