How Do Airline Credit Card Rewards Schemes Work?

Posted: Apr 28, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Are you looking for a good value airline rewards card?

There are dozens of different rewards credit cards available in Australia. There are cards affiliated to programs where you can benefit from experiences, cash-back, merchandise or even discounts at retailers. However, many of the most popular credit card rewards program in Australia link your reward points to an airline loyalty scheme.

Airline rewards

There are three types of airline rewards credit card:

Linked directly to a scheme. Examples of these are the Citibank Emirates Card and the NAB Qantas card. The credit card rewards points you earn on your card are transferred directly into points affiliated to a specific airline's rewards program

Linked to an airline rewards scheme. These are cards which are linked directly to schemes such as Virgin's Velocity points or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles. You effectively transfer your own credit card rewards points into the equivalent number of rewards with a popular airline scheme Points redeemed directly for travel. Examples of these are the Citi Rewards card or the HSBC Rewards Plus scheme. Here, you earn credit card rewards on your card and then you can book flights and travel through a dedicated travel service operated by your card provider

Sign up for the right card

When you are looking for an airline credit card rewards program, you should carefully research the market to find the most appropriate scheme for you. By using online resources such as www.creditcardrewards.com.au you can look at all the various different airline rewards schemes in order to determine which card is the right one for you.

Are there certain airlines that you travel with regularly? Do you need a scheme which offers both domestic and international travel? Or do you want a scheme that gives you flexibility to redeem your credit card rewards for different types of travel benefits?

Use your card

Once your chosen card has arrived, the key to amassing rewards is to use your rewards credit card as often as you can. Most cards offer between one and two reward points per dollar spent on the card. You should therefore try and use the card as often as you can, but always make sure that you can repay your balance in full at the end of every month.

If you don't, you will find that the interest you are paying on your card negates the value of any flight rewards you may have earned.

Redeem for flights

Once you have accumulated the requisite number of credit card rewards, you are able to redeem these for flights through your chosen airline rewards program.

Many cards will allow you to use a ‘points plus pay' option. This means that you use a combination of credit card rewards points and cash to pay for any flights you wish to book.
