The system of banking in India dates back to the later half of the 18th century. The first bank that was established in India was known as The General Bank of India. It was founded in the year 1786, today it is defunct. State Bank of India is the oldest one in the country that still exists. It was previously known as Bank of Calcutta and started operations on June 1806.

Banks in India have come along way since liberalization. The banks in India are broadly categorized into Public, Private and Foreign banks.
