American Tradition Benefits All ~ Play Ball!
One outdoor game all children in America seem to become familiar with at a young age is baseball. And one association which has done the most to provide the opportunity for kids of all ages and backgrounds to play baseball, and develop life-long values, is Little League.
Remember seeing that sticker on the rear window of the car ahead of you while waiting at a traffic light? The image of a baseball diamond set inside a keystone and encircled with the words "Courage, Loyalty and Character." This is the symbol that stands for the values which Little League strives to instill.
This emblem recognized the world over by youngsters and those young at heart is a trademark for Little League, and represents more than just a game, it represents a Spirit.
The Spirit of Competition - a value deeply rooted in American tradition.
Competition thrives on cooperation, while placing high esteem on the efforts and accomplishments of each individual.
Countless boys and girls have internalized these values and grown up to become important contributors to a flourishing society and a prosperous nation. And many more have benefited from the efforts of these enterprising individuals whose ambition embraces these values.
One reason so many youngsters have enjoyed and benefited from Little League activities during the past 70 years is because of the nature of its structure and the commitment to its beliefs.
Participation is not limited to those who have attained a certain level of skill or physical agility. Nor is it restricted to those with the ability and means to pay for the privilege of playing. Little League programs are open to all kids of various age groups who possess one common desire ~ the yearning to play ball.
For the new recruit, emphasis is first placed on teaching basic fundamentals of the game. These instructions include routine drills, rules and the cooperation necessary to function as a team. Beyond that each child improves according to his or her ambition, natural talent and ability.
The opportunities offered to children who demonstrate a strong sense of personal motivation is not unlike the advantages which present themselves to the like-minded adult citizen. An adult who achieves promotions based on similar personal convictions, determination and a willingness to cooperate with others.
The vision for this organization came from a man named Carl E. Stotz, a lumberyard clerk in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. As he liked to describe the event; it was during a game of catch with his two young nephews when he accidentally banged his leg against a lilac bush.
While sitting on the back steps as the pain subsided, he suddenly blurted out to his nephews: "How would you like to play on a regular team with uniforms, your own cap, a new ball for every game and bats your size?"
Soon after that summer afternoon in 1938 Mr. Stotz put together three teams to compete; the rest is history… Today, the Little League organization operates 7,000 programs with 3 million children in over 100 countries.
The American tradition of playing baseball and the life-long values it teaches, have helped develop the character of many who have grown up to become inspirational leaders and organizers. The Little League organization has been a major contributor providing this opportunity for youngsters.
It's not by chance the three colors that make up the Little League insignia emblazoned with those words; "Courage, Loyalty and Character"… are Red, White and Blue!

While I am still a casual fan of Major League Baseball, I am not anything close to the baseball fanatic that I once used to be. When I was growing up, baseball was king, but not so much now. I recently did a little introspection to try to determine why this is the case. When I did, I was able to come up with ten reasons for my diminished interest in baseball.
It appears that Major League Baseball is getting more and more like the National Hockey League (NHL), in which there is absolutely no correlation between its regular season and the outcome of its postseason. In other words, baseball's regular season is becoming almost completely irrelevant.

The umpire appears to have weighty responsibilities and in return is shown little respect or appreciation for his or her efforts. The truth is, most umpires benefit in ways people do not realize. The many requirements and constant demands during a game are considered challenges to the umpire. Meeting these challenges in a structured and professional manner gives them personal satisfaction.
As an umpire you learn to ignore the small insults but when it continues or escalates you have to take action to control managers, coaches, and players. Here is a perspective I have developed as an umpire that helps me control these predicaments. Rather than focus on specific accusations, concentrate your efforts to protect everyone else in the game from the influence this person may be have on them.
The observations people make throughout the game will influence the umpire's reputation. Your behavior during the entire game and the energy you put forth as an umpire are used to judge your ability when making decisions, especially on close calls.
Baseball and softball umpires have an assortment of protective gear available to them. However, this specialized equipment must be worn properly in order to achieve the results for which it was designed. This is the best defense an umpire has to avoid injury while behind the plate.
