Different Types of Basketball Hoops

Playing basketball is one of the Great American pastimes. Whether you play outdoors, indoors, by yourself or on a team, there are many different types of basketball hoops and backboards available to fit any need and any budget.

Portable basketball hoops normally are made to mount on backboards attached to a stand that has a base filled with sand or water and is sometimes on wheels. You may not expect to have to move your basketball court very often, but this portable set-up leaves plenty of room for changing the location of your court should there be a need to. Other portable options are some wall-mount options. No pole needed, they just mount on a wall or a garage or even a tree for an instant basketball court.

More permanent options are those that require a hole to be dug, filled with cement around a pole that you have added to the backboard. After a few hours of drying time, your court is ready. This option is used when you can dig a hole and permanently anchor a pole in the ground, fixing the court in one position. While it can be removed, it's a lot of work. Generally, these are left where they're placed the first time. Some wall-mount units are also permanently affixed to the wall. While they too can be removed, it's again a lot of work to do so and normally requires repairs to the wall where it used to be after removal.

Two other common types of basketball hoops include toy basketball hoops and electronic basketball hoops. Toy basketball hoops are small and come with fixtures to hook over a door or mount on a wall for indoor play. These usually come with smaller, foam balls instead of using full size regulation balls. Electronic basketball hoops are generally found in arcades and track the number of shots made in a specific period of time. Some electronic basketball hoops come in regulation size while others are available in the toy size. These are also quite popular at fairs and carnivals as a game booth where the participant can win prizes.
