In terms of sheer physical stature, Dena Evans probably did more with less than just about any point guard that ever played the game. Only 5'4" tall, Dena was named "Miss Basketball" in the state of Texas as a high school senior and then became a star at the University of Virginia, where she led her teams to three NCAA Final Four appearances and a 118-17 record during her four-year career. As a senior at UVA, Dena received the Frances P. Naismith award as the country's top collegiate player under 5'7'. After college, she played professionally in the ABL and in professional leagues overseas. In 2002, Dena was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th Anniversary All-Time Women's Basketball Team. Dena's pursuit of excellence was never confined to the basketball court. A Rhodes Scholar Finalist and Magna Cum Laude graduate with a degree in economics, she was selected as one of the top ten student-athletes in the nation as a senior and earned First Team Academic All-American honors for three consecutive years. A former PGC graduate herself, Dena has directed the Point Guard College since 2002, and is committed to carrying on the legacy and teachings of her long-time friend and mentor Dick DeVenzio, who founded PGC in the early 90s and directed it until his death in 2001. Dena is Owner and Chairman of Point Guard College and will co-direct Advanced Concepts on the PGC Tour '09.
Each year, thousands of girls all across North America make plans to spend their summer working on improving their basketball skills. Some will spend their time in the gym, others will spend it in the driveway or the park, and some will attend one of the hundreds of top girls basketball camps that are offered all around the country.
With hundreds of girls basketball camps across the country to choose from, selecting the right one for you may require an understanding of where you are in your career, and a look at what your goals are for this summer.
Here are a few ways you can help yourself determine what the right approach is for you.
1) Getting Noticed vs. Getting Better
Some girls basketball camps cater to players who are looking to get noticed by college coaches and AAU teams (think Five Star, Nike), while others tend to focus on developing a player's overall game (think Point Guard College, Hoop Group). Camps that offer exposure generally provide more games, but camps that provide more skill development often help you make bigger strides in your game. Be honest with yourself about what you're looking for, and proceed accordingly!
2) On the Court vs. Off the Court
Not all girls basketball camps approach skill development the same way. Some focus more on the physical parts of the game: dribbling, shooting, passing, defence, and rebounding - while others spend time on developing the mental aspects of the game as well.
Camps that focus on skill development will spend more time on the court, in sessions or games, but those that focus on skill and mental development spend time doing things such as: video analysis of your technique, leadership training, and breaking down basketball related concepts in the classroom.
You can generally request a weekly schedule before you sign up, so have a look and see if the girls basketball camps you are considering are focusing on the mental aspects of the game as well as the physical.
Summary:
As you plan for another summer on the hardwood, think hard about your options for how you're going to spend your time. If attending one of the girls basketball camps in your area is part of your approach, make sure you take a few of these thoughts into consideration so you can take your game to it's full potential. Are you looking to get noticed? Are you looking to get better? Are you looking to play the game, or looking to learn how to think the game? Whichever your choice, make the most of it, and have fun!
