NBA – Are the Boston Celtics too good too soon?

Posted: Dec 23, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Let's get back to talking about the Boston Celtics for a moment. As of press time the Celtics have now linked 14 consecutive wins. That's the best streak of the 2010-2011 NBA Season, and at 22-4 they hold the best record in the nation. The squad has the best record in defense.

At 91.4 points allowed per game, the Celtics D has proved to be as effective as head coach Doc Rivers could want it to be. With Rajon Rondo on the floor, the playmaking has been out of this world. His talent and the ability to pass the ball to any of the Big Three, at any given moment has given the Celtics a 25.6 assists per game quota that has ranked them as the No.1 team in the nation.

So if we just look straight at the numbers, one can help but to realize that the Celtics are doing a very fine job this season. There is only one concern. Health. Let's face it, it is quite evident that the Boston Celtics rooster is made up of experienced and aging NBA veterans. We could expect players of the caliber of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to have proved the committee that they deserve their part in the NBA Hall of Fame. If you take into consideration that you also have the talents of Shaquille O'Neal, that is 4 possible hall of famers in the floor at the same time. And yet they are all over their 30's and even Doc Rivers recognizes that his big men can't play for more then 35-40 minutes per game.

So yes, the Celtics have brought in some backup. Figures like Kendrick Perkins, Delonte West, Glen Davis and Nate Robinson are there to fill in the gaps. Rondo is the youngest and strongest (that is, that could go the longest) of the Celtics starting lineup. When Rivers wants to give Rondo a rest he can always count on the small but sharp and fast as a bullet Robinson to get the ball around and into the basket. But then there is the fact of staying healthy.

The Celtics played their Wednesday game against the Philadelphia 76ers without Rajon Rondo who was out because of a foot injury. They also played without Kendrick Perkins who recently underwent ACL surgery, and Jermaine O'Neil who has not only a sore knee but also had the flu. That's not all. Delonte West is also out due to a fractured right wrist. And yet somehow, the Celtics managed to defeat the 76ers 84-80 and keep on holding to their 14-game winning streak.

The Celtics should have not won this last game against the 76ers. They shot for a season low 38.8 percent. They had to deal with two technical fouls by Paul Pierce and Keving Garnett. So yes, they are winning. 14 games in a row means that the Celtics outplayed the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs that managed to link 12 wins in a row.

What's the bottom line? The Celtics are struggling and yet they manage to win. They have been able to keep on winning despite the injuries. That's something that they couldn't do last year. They have a well-build squad and as of press time they are my favorite team to win this years Championship.
