The Knicks squeeze by the Memphis Grizzlies
Anthony's jumper over Allen with 0.5 seconds left won the game.Ever since Carmelo Anthony was brought in from the Denver Nuggets after a 15-player trade off, fans of the New York Knicks had been waiting for him to put one of those clutch-time performances for which he was so famous in the Rockies. Well, if they happened to be watching last nights game, those Knicks fans got exactly what they were asking for.
Anthony's 19-foot jumper over Tony Allen with 0.5 seconds left on the game helped the Knicks withstand an impressive effort from the Memphis Grizzlies who were very close from completing a come-from-behind win in the fourth quarter. At the end, Melo's shot was golden and just enough to give the Knicks a 110-108 win at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee.
Anthony was the man of the hour, but he wasn't the only key-player for the Knicks. Amare Stoudemire added 26 points for the Knicks, while Toney Douglas finished with 18 points and a career-high 10 assists. Melo finished the game leading the Knicks with 31 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 steal and of course the game-winning shot, that quite frankly, shouldn't had been necessary had the Knicks played the fourth quarter as well as they played the first three.
Quite frankly the credit for such an entertaining game really goes here to the Grizzlies. The New York Knicks led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter while shooting nearly 60 percent. But they just couldn't hold it for too long and their performance dropped significantly. With 6-of-20 shooting and careless ballhandling in the fourth period, the Knicks gave the Memphis Grizzlies a real chance to catch up.
Memphis was trailing 61-53 at the break. At the beginning of the second half the Knicks were still in great form completing their first four shots and pushing the lead 74-57 before carrying a 96-82 advantage into the fourth quarter. And that's when Tony Allen with 22 points, 1 rebound and 4 assists and the rest of the Grizzlies got back in the game.
Like we said Tony Allen led Memphis with 22 points, missing only one of his eight shots. Darrell Arthur scored 21 points, while Mike Conley and Zach Randolph contributed with 20 points each. Randolph grabbed 11 rebounds, as the Grizzlies relied heavily on their defense to close in the gap.
The Knicks weren't flawless either, but credit goes to them for winning despite 17 turnovers and Memphis' 33-4 advantage at the free throw line. Extra kudos go to the New York Knicks for connecting 12-of-24 from outside the arc. The Knicks are now 13-1 when they hit at least a dozen 3-pointers.
This win over the Grizzlies gave the Knicks their third straight win and certainly increased their chances of holding on to the sixth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks will play the Dallas Mavericks later on today. It should be one heck of a game as both teams are seriously needing good results to get into the NBA Playoffs. As of press-time the Knicks are a 6-point underdog for this game. But if Melo and Co. can put together another great run on the offensive end, there are good chances they could pull of an upset.
