Bathroom Water Damage

Posted: May 17, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Bathrooms are likely places for water damage as it is there that we make use of water many times each day by flushing the toilet, showering, taking a bath in the bathtub and washing hands in the sink. Wear and tear is natural in such a heavily used area and regular inspections are good practice. The humidity level in bathrooms is usually very high, especially after hot showers and baths, and there is a higher than average risk of mold damage on top of the water damage due to the high moisture present.  Mold carries a high risk of allergic reactions in susceptible individuals, so checking for mold is very important. Make sure to pay attention to both discoloration and foul odors, as both are signs of mold. Swollen, cracked, discolored and stained bathroom walls are a telltale sign of water damage, as are electric circuit shorts.

However, when water damage goes unnoticed and unrepaired, the integrity of the whole infrastructure becomes shaky. The surface of internal walls and the supporting wood beams behind the sheetrock become bloated and soft as they absorb runaway water from either a leaky roof or leaky ceiling or from a flooded floor or soaking wet carpet. The decaying and broken down wood cannot possibly support a balanced structure and eventually, the frame is sure to collapse.

To remedy this unpleasant possibility, a simple bathroom inspection is recommended several times each year, as a precautionary measure. Checking for and repairing cracked caulk and grout, discolored stains on the walls, and leaking or dripping plumbing connections under the sink and around the toilet, bathtub and shower are a must to prevent water damages. As problems are discovered, determine how to repair them.

If you are handy, you can attend to minor issues yourself, but for more extensive issues, a plumber or an electrician may be needed. Once damage is severe, you may decide to engage a water damage restoration contractor. Mold can be a health hazard if not addressed promptly and mold remediation by expert water damage restoration professionals is highly recommended to prevent any disturbing health consequences.
