Boilers – What's New For 2011?

Posted: Jan 21, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Boilers are a massive sector and with the UK having such a cold climate – despite dire predictions that we'll all be wearing shorts and sipping Pina Coladas outside in January – they remain a central part of domestic life. But what's in store for 2011? Are there any great developments in boiler technology in the near future?

Well, no. When it comes to boilers, it's pretty much steady as she goes for the next couple of years.

Gas boilers are pretty much as efficient as they can be, thanks to condensing technology, so advancements will really come in the types of fuel, rather than the type of boiler. Most boilers sold in the UK are what's known as condensing and this was the big breakthrough which occurred over the last ten years. Condensing technology basically means that you make the best use of the fuel you are burning in the boiler.

Now old boilers would say ignite a gas flame and literally remove only about 50% of that combustion process to heat the water to the required temperature. Meaning that half of the combustion heat would disappear up the chimney. So when energy got more expensive, things had to improve. Firstly, heat exchangers switched to aluminium from steel. These are better at transferring the heat from the flame to the water, which raised efficiency levels to around 70% and over.

But no matter how efficient the heat exchanger, you still got a lot of waste heat going up the flue. So, condensing technology was born and this basically means taking a second grab at the heat as it flows up the flue. This requires a further heat exchanger and a flue fan because the gases – once their heat has been withdrawn – do not flow so easily and need to be helped out of the chimney. What's more, the process products a liquid – basically water – called condensate which has to be drained away outside of the property. The flue fan and condensate mean that boilers increased in price because more kit was needed and the installation time was greater.

In return for a more expensive system though, condensing boilers leapt in efficiency and quickly reached the 90% level, with some now scoring 109% efficiencies. These are rated A (the best) on the Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK (SEDBUK) scale and indeed, building regulations now stipulate that boilers must now be either A, or B rated, unless the property doesn't allow one to be fitted.

So with boilers hitting such high efficiency ratings, there does not appear much room for rapid future improvement. That might be right, but there are those that criticise the SEDBUK ratings, saying they were too leniently scaled in the first place to help an industry wanting to appease eco government ministers and that new ratings from Europe might stir things up again.

Even so, don't expect too many radical developments with boilers over the next 12 months.
