Save Money With a New Shower Head

Posted: Nov 28, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Utility bills often give us some of the biggest headaches. We get them monthly and they're often higher than we'd like them to be.  Fortunately, you can take several steps to lower your electric, water, and gas bills. The bathroom is one place where you can significantly slash your utility bills. Besides altering the lighting in your bathroom, you can also change the shower heads to low-flow units. Here are some helpful tips for choosing one:

1. Set a budget:

The price of low-flow shower heads can differ significantly. This is based on various factors, including their material, efficiency, extras, and so on.  Although you can find low-flow shower heads that cost as little as $5.00, other models can be substantially higher. So by setting a budget, you can ensure that you use fiscal discipline when shopping for a new shower head. By setting a ceiling , you can avoid overspending on a unit.

2. Compare the water's flow-rate:

When comparing different models of low-flow shower heads, it's important to compare the water flow rates. The key is to find one that has a low water flow-rate, yet is powerful enough to provide an effective shower. Keep in mind that the more efficient a low-flow head is, the higher its price tag may be.

3. Determine if low-flow is the right option:

While low-flow shower heads provide several benefits, they're not for everyone. You might determine that even the most powerful units don't provide a stream of water that's sufficient for you. So weigh all of your options before making your final choice.

4. Choose the right finish:

As with other types of shower heads, low-flow units are available in a wide array of finishes.  The shower head's finish has a major impact on its cost. You should definitely consider a non-tarnishing surface;  however, bear in mind that such finishes will add to the price.

5. Choose a design that best suits your needs:

There are various types of low-flow shower heads. The two main varieties are aerating  and non-aerating . Aerating shower heads combine steam, from the shower head's water, with air.  This creates a powerful stream of water; however, it takes more water and time to get hot.  On the other hand, the non-aerating variety doesn't add air to steam from the shower head's water; producing a pulsing effect.  Not everyone will care for this sensation.  Although the stream of water is weaker, the shower head's water stays at a constant temperature and more importantly, it uses less water and energy to become hot.   It's important to consider your showering needs and preferences  before selecting either an aerating or non-aerating model.

6. Compare bells and whistles:

As when choosing any other appliance, it's important to consider the various extras that are available. Although such bells and whistles will boost the price tag of the low-flow shower head, it can also make your life more convenient. So before choosing a particular  model, compare the different extras available.  For example, some units come with a shutoff valve to use even less water during your shower.  Others may offer different varieties of sprays.

If you're looking to save a little extra money on your utility bill each month, consider a new, low-flow shower head.
