The Perfect Plumber

Cowboy Plumbers

When looking to install a bathroom whether it is a full renovation or not, everyone wants a reliable and honest plumber. We have all heard or had experience of the countless horror stories concerning cowboy plumbers. It is not then true to assume all plumbers are this way it is just that the shortage of skilled professionals results in an increased amount of unscrupulous people who are happy to ruin the reputation of the trade. Many people find that recommendations are the best way to find a suitable plumber and they would be right. Recommendations are great especially if you can see the work that they have carried out in a property. Although this situation would help, it may be that no one knows a reputable plumber resulting in you researching yourself. But the question is how do you do this successfully?

Research Established Plumbers

There are various websites including the institute of plumbing which is a registered charity created to help you find a qualified and reputable plumber. Websites like this one have been specifically created to protect you and your property. If you are searching by means of the yellow pages or other directory, then there are key questions you can ask before you say yes (no matter how persuasive they are!). You should find out how long they have been in business, a well established plumbing company is less likely to leave your project halfway through the job. References are always a good idea, so you can preview other projects they have undertaken. Ask them questions about guarantees and insurance, essential when undertaking any home improvement project. Find out if they are a member of a professional trade body, which means they have to strictly stand by the organisations codes. If the plumber says that he or she is then research it by contacting the trade body do not just believe everything that is said. Do not be embarrassed to ask these questions, after all if you don’t it will cost more than your pride to put right. If you require a plumber urgently call a handful in your area, do not just accept the first quote, as it may be more expensive than necessary. There are no written guidelines on how much a plumber should charge, so it is vital you shop around if possible. If you have to pay a deposit before the bathroom is fitted make sure it is a reasonable price, never just pay the whole sum upfront.

The Bathroom Guidelines

A written contract is a good idea to let the plumber know first hand what you expect and what the plumber can achieve in a set time. It can be very basic with a clear description of the work, deadlines, guarantees and a price as agreed with yourself and the plumber. This type of contract is helpful to create a clear understanding between the two parties. If the contract isn’t followed, you still have basic rights under the law to protect you.
