wet room shower enclosureThe wet room  - what is it? Whilst wet rooms are growing in popularity and an increasing number of homeowners are choosing to install one in their bathroom, for those unfamiliar with the term, a wet room can commonly be defined as a waterproof room which is usually fitted with a shower.

The concept of the wet room originates in Scandinavia and in recent years this innovative idea has inspired manufacturers worldwide to introduce the wet room as a practical and viable solution suitable for the majority of homes.

So, just what is a wet room?  In simple terms, a wet room is one which becomes the shower enclosure itself and usually replaces the more conventional plastic shower tray with a drain set into the floor. Pioneered in Scandinavia where they do not have shower trays, the wet room has a waterproof membrance which is installed underneath the floor and wall tiles. This innovative idea allows the homeowner more scope to create a truly unique room in terms of design, layout and overall style.

This clever concept incorporates innovation of design with ground-breaking technology and is completely watertight providing it is professionally installed and is tanked correctly, which is reassuring to those homeowners with concerns regarding water leakage and damage. This means that even in situations where the tile sealant is inadequate, the water cannot leak and penetrate the membrane.

Wet rooms can offer many benefits when compared with the more traditiional bathroom, including elimination of water damage in the home and is compatible with underfloor heating systems, which are also becoming popular alternatives to standard heating systems. Additionally, wet rooms are applicable for use in homes for either elderly or those with restricted mobility and can literally transform the pleasure and comfort of the showering experience, as the need for a step is removed.

Regardless of the size of your existing bathroom, a wet room can be a viable alternative and is equally suited to small and large rooms.  In a smaller bathroom, a wet room will give more space and will transform the larger bathroom into a spa-inspired sanctuary!

wet rooms are rooms with no distinct shower space. There are no shower enclosures, just an area where you can splash. All the water is drained through one drain hole. With a wet room you can save space and enjoy the freedom offered by the lack of enclosures. Just step in and feel as if you are under a waterfall in some exotic faraway location.

Wet rooms are a modern design, created as a way to utilise small bathrooms more efficiently. Instead of setting aside space for a bath tub or a shower, the entire room is used as a shower. This removes the separation from the shower and the rest of the room, resulting in the same floor level throughout the room.
