Shea butter and its uses

Posted: Nov 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Shea Butter is a unique natural butter that is extracted from the fruit of the African Shea-Karite tree.  In the United States we have only recently become aware of the many benefits of Shea Butter, but it has been used in Africa for centuries.  Today many companies make products that claim to contain Shea Butter but really only have a small amount of it in there products.  Using the natural form of Shea Butter is the best way to get all of the benefits.  Shea Butter can vary in color , odor, and hardness, but it is always a great way to take care of your skin.

What Shea Butter Looks Like

Shea Butter is a soft natural butter that is liquid at body temperature.  In its natural raw form it can vary from yellowish to white and smells nutty. Most people do not mind the odor associated with the raw form of Shea Butter. The raw form contains the most vitamins and nutrients, and is therefore the best choice to receive the most benefits. The Refined version is slightly harder, is lighter in color, and has only a slight odor.

The Ultra Refined type is refined using a solvent and is very hard and white.  It also has almost no odor.

The Properties of Shea Butter

Shea Butter is naturally high in vitamins A, E, and F, which are all powerful anti-oxidants that nourish and protect the skin.  The high levels of these vitamins plus the large amount of unsaponifiable oils naturally occurring in Shea Butter promote elasticity, and make its moisturizing abilities second to none.

Benefits of Using Shea Butter

Promotes Elasticity Protects Your Skin from Environmental Factors Soothes Rough Dry Skin Softens Dry Damaged Hair Soothes Diaper/Skin Rash Softens Cracked Heals and Elbows Prevents Stretch Marks Helps with Eczema and Psoriasis Creates Luster and Shine on Dull Looking Hair

Shea Butter isn't a magic cure all for all skin conditions, but it is one of the best treatments out there.  It can soften and protect even the most sensitive skin, and provide relief from very dry skin.  Shea Butter can be used on your hair, your face, and as an all over body moisture solution. It is truly a versatile and natural alternative to commercial moisture creams that can leave your skin feeling more dry than when you applied it.
