How to Write Great Blog Titles

The only way your blog will be read is if it's ranked high enough among search engines so that potential readers can actually find you. That means being able to write a title that's catchy enough for your readers, and optimized enough for the search engines. Here are some tips on how to walk that fine line.

  1. Find out what the search volume is for the words you're considering using in your title. Google offers a free service called Google AdWords, which will tell you the search volume for any keyword you use. Taking advantage of this feature is a no-brainer, and will help you pick the perfect keywords to include in your blog title. The difference between "Brand" and "Branding" is just three little letters that any competent writer can work around in creating a title, but as it turns out, one is used four times more by Google users, making "Brand" a much more valuable word to use in a title than "Branding. " Information like this can be the difference between a successful personal website and an unsuccessful one.
  2. Make your blog's title relate to its content. Once you get your reader to your website, you need him or her to click through to your actual blog posts. That means accurately telling him what lies ahead. If your title has no relation to your post, then the reader will take one look, then scram: not the behavior you want from him.
  3. Your title should provide enough information to actually engage the reader. Which blog are you more likely to read: "How I stopped worrying and learned to love The Bomb" or "Nuclear bombs"? The first tells the reader that your post will be about your progression from someone who worried constantly about nuclear Armageddon to someone who thinks that the bomb is beneficial—either that, or that you'll be discussing Dr. Strangelove. The second tells the reader that you'll be discussing nuclear bombs, but in terms of what—their destructive force? The ramifications should Iran get a hold on one? The dangers of not helping Russia secure theirs?—he has no idea.
  4. Know your audience. This is a truism that holds for deciding on what domain name you want your free website creator to give you to whether it's worth it to create a forum—and to your blog title. The more you know about the people reading your blog—or the people you want to read your blog—the better you'll be able to target your titles. If, on the other hand, your blog is targeted at parents, then your titles should reflect their interests—the dangers of sleep deprivation, for example, or how to save money for college.
  5. Create a sense of urgency. This is Headlining 101: write a mysterious title, such as "What our teenagers aren't telling us about their sex lives," or "How to tell if your neighbor is in an Islamist sleeper cell." They promise content that will help you solve an urgent problem: figuring out what your laconic teen is up to and protecting your country from your good-for-nothing neighbor.
