Should I Upgrade to WordPress 3.1
Short answer…Yes.
When WordPress 3.0 dropped I was a little bit worried. I had a number of sites running frameworks, themes and plugins that I was really scared of losing when the upgrade happened. I held off on the updates for a long time, but I began to want the new shiny WordPress goodies so I updated. A couple plugin updates later and I was good to go.
A WordPress upgrade can be scary, but for the most part it is usually a painless process. That said, make SURE to BACK UP your blog data before an upgrade. Yes, things usually go smooth, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
I suggest that you upgrade because WordPress 3.1 has three features that people should be very interested in (more than that, but these are my favs).
1. Internal Linking – There is now a button that will allow you to add an internal link right into your post. The button will let you browse your content and instantly add an internal link. Proper internal linking is one of the keys to search engine optimization. This new function will ensure that you are easily able to create an effective internal linking plan.
2. New Editor Interface – The WordPress 3.1 editor looks slightly toned down from previous versions. This is because more options are hidden. You can click Screen Options to bring them back though.
3. New Admin Bar - When you are logged into your site and viewing your pages or posts you will now see an admin bar along the top of the screen. This bar will let you quickly reach different areas o the WordPress dashboards, including adding a new post or comment moderation.
While 3.1 is not a massive upgrade from 3.0 it still adds a couple interesting new features. Simplifying internal linking may mean one less plugin I need. The new interface does seem sleeker and will be easier for new people to use. The admin bar also adds makes using WordPress easier and more intuitive. Upgrading WordPress usually seems scarier than it is, for internal linking alone I would strongly suggest you upgrade to WordPress 3.1 today.
