Social Etiquette: Promote Your Social Media Aspirations

Posted: May 04, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Once upon a time, journalism was hallowed ground reserved only for the cleverest and most tenacious. Some of this still holds true, but in this day and age if you're not able to improvise, adapt, and overcome all the new ways that news is reported, you're very likely to go the way of the dinosaurs.

Today's new media, commonly referred to as Social Media, is starting to play a very important role in the overall delivery of news. More and more people have chosen to stop becoming consumers of news in favor of producing it, at least to some extent.

Some attempts at social media have been very successful. Bloggers like Dooce (Heather Armstrong) have become so popular they've wound up with their own television shows, and have online followers that rank in the millions. A success story like this is all it takes for millions of other to aspire to greatness. However, if you want to be effective with driving traffic to your website or blog, here are some steps that can really benefit your efforts.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of social media sites that you can use to draw attention to what you're putting out there. Obviously, no one has the time to use them all effectively, and some of them aren't worth your time anyway, but that doesn't mean the best of them shouldn't be used for all they're worth.

Right out of the gate you should find some services that are easy for you to use. Digg, StumbleUpon, Twitter, and Facebook are all great sites. They're easy to use, they can link to each other, and each has the potential to send a large number of eyeballs your direction.

If you have any hope at all of becoming an expert at this thing called social media, use your preferred sites on a regular basis. Those who choose to follow you want new content from you on a regular basis. By using a few services often and effectively, you give yourself the best chance to differentiate yourself from all the Johnny Come Latelys who have one very short-lived idea.

Content is king in the world of media, and that rings true in social media as well. Developing content that meets the expectations of your followers is mandatory if you want to have any chance of success. You don't have to write or present controversial material, or anything outrageous to attract attention. Followers want consistently good information, entertaining articles, pictures that are relevant, and above proof that you are an expert in your chosen area.

Inviting user feedback is critical for your success. People have chosen to follow you for a reason, which means they're interested in your content and ideas. Let them provide feedback, or even contribute to the content. Essentially this is called networking. You are creating a network of like-minded people who can all serve the purpose of making each other a stronger and more formidable presence.

Remember, this is called "social" media, which, to a great extent, means socializing. Choosing to interact with those who follow your blog will only serve to strengthen your marketplace and make your presence more important.

Use your Cox internet service to its fullest, follow these tips and suggestions, and you just might turn yourself into the next internet sensation!

I'm one of those early adopters of cool technology. Sure, it means I pay more – sometime a lot more – to have the cool stuff early, but I don't mind because I'm totally a technophile.
