If you are thinking of starting an online business to make some nice income using your computer, blog is a good place for you to start off. You can monetize it in various ways, depending on how you want to do it.
1. Advertising space
You can select a topic that is in your area of expertise and create a blog around it. Then sign up with Google Adsense and you are able to place related ads on your blog. Depending on the niches and the keywords you are targeting on the blogs, each click on the ads from the visitors will earn you money ranging from few cents to few dollars.

Sign up with the affiliate programs you have chosen, and you can start to make money immediately.
3. Freelance job
Blogging can be a good way to advertise your services as a freelance writer, web designer, photographer etc... Since you are an expert in the area of field, writing interesting and valuable articles for your blog should not be a problem. Update the blog frequently and you will have visitors subscribe to your blog's RSS feed, and subsequently engage the services.
