Chuck Lin likes and highly recommends this new independent product review site
Yelp, Amazon, some dude's review blog -- there are so many opportunities to review something! Stay away from funded sites, though. Visit your basic DIY review site where fun anarchy rules, and the people get their say, not some corporate Silicon Valley venture capital deal. We're talking about real people reviewing real products and services, going toe-to-toe and letting the chips fall where they may.
Sounds like fun, right? But it's more than that! It's about making the market more efficient. In these trying economic times, every dollar counts. You want to know what you're paying for, and so do other people. Learn and teach about what's good out there in the marketplace, with no venture capital, no board of directors, no highly paid executives running anything.
Keep it real. Go to (or build) a site where you can feel free to review anything, whether you liked it or not, and maybe even use a naughty word every now and then. Get it out! Review small businesses or huge corporations. Heck, review your own business. Why not? It's free advertising. Be aware, though, that if you review your own product or service, others will have a say so make sure it's as good as you say it is! Promote the things you like, or tell the world when you get burned.
Pull no punches (but be careful not to commit libel or slander). Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing? Of course, you can scream to the high heavens, but if nobody finds you, your review won't be of much use to anyone. That's why you should do your reviewing at an established and active site -- but one that's non-corporate because that just opens up the door to gaming of the system by the big boys, and that would defeat the whole purpose.
Don't bother starting your own blog because nobody will read it except your friends and family, and even they will get bored quickly. Fortunately, there are a lot of people who have done that legwork for you. Get out there and find them! Once you become a reviewer, you will have power in the marketplace. It's a great feeling!
