The camp, as expected, had tight security precluding the boys from the typical luxuries of the normal life such as TV and music. The usual warm days under the sun were replaced by screaming drill instructors. The attractive tropical trees dotted on the island were switched to long and lonely days in the barracks. And the fun and laid back vibe was transformed into grueling nights and days in boot camp training. This is truly an unraveling of the horrific U.S. Marine Corps training at the height of the South Vietnam conflict. Amidst this, Pineapple Sam had no choice but to gather all the courage he can get and put his game face on.
This story is a perfect emblem of fact and fiction; thus, a promise in the literary scene. One of its best assets is its ability to create vivid scenes from the past specifically its reference to the events during the South Vietnam conflict. The author was also able to supply to its reader the right amount of enthusiasm to keep each reader glued on it. Add to this is the fact that it contains all the elements that should be found in a short story. From the protagonist's adventures in the camp to his strict drill instructors, this is worthy to be experienced.
