Strategy for getting maximum retention and benefit from books

Today, I'm going to share with you my strategy for getting maximum retention and benefit from books on personal development. Unfortunately, on average we only retain 10% of what we read. But there are ways to increase the amount of information we retain and can benefit from in the future.

As with most things that are worthwhile, it may take you a little bit longer initially, but will save you lots of time in the future. This approach will also allow you to get more benefit, and therefore better results, from each book you read. The long-term benefit definitely outweighs the short-term cost.

First, when you read a book on personal development or other non-fiction book use a highlighter to accentuate the most important concepts and information. I do this and get teased by my kids, but that's ok.

The highlighting allows you to go back and re-read the book in a short amount of time, reaffirming the most important concepts. The more times you re-read the highlights, the more information you will retain. You should be able to re-read a highlighted book in under an hour while reinforce the most important information and concepts in the book.

Now, for the best personal development books, type up the most important highlighted information into notes. These notes can be reviewed in an even shorter time than re-reading the highlighted book. Review these notes every quarter, or as needed.

There is an important learning concept called the cone of learning by Edgar Dale. It says we retain the following

10% of what we read

20% of what we hear

30% of what we see

50% of what we hear and see

70% of what we say

90% of what we both say and do

Based on the cone of learning you could get even more benefit by taking these notes and making an audio recording. This way you would be saying the information, which has a higher retention than reading. You can also listen to the recording periodically while driving, exercising, etc. Of course you will get the most benefit from books on personal development by taking action.
