Are the Garment Labels Worth It?
Too many times we hear about sweatshops and union workers striking because of the low wages that they, as garment workers, are being paid, and the forced child labor that occurs. We all remember the Kathy Lee Gifford controversy with the textile manufacturer in Honduras. Claiming that she didn't know the company was a sweat shop, compensation was given to all workers that were not paid, and apologies issued by Kathy Lee and Wal-Mart Company. Emblems, custom patches, sew labels, garment labels, and clothes labels are the main items in the textile manufacturing plants that are accused of such unfair treatment of their laborers.
As the world begins to focus more on earning their "green label" and producing their ecofriendly patch for a more conscious planet, I wonder if we have done enough to stop sweatshop labor in, not only textile manufacturing companies overseas, but in our own USA manufacturers of custom patches. Have the American people really paid attention to our own textile manufacturing companies, or have we put our need of emblems, custom patches, clothes labels, sew labels, clothing tags, and garment labels, ahead of our own worker's needs?
New York City and Los Angeles are notorious for their surplus of sweatshops throughout their cities. Manufacturers of PVC labels, rubber labels, custom labels, clothes labels and tags, sew labels, emblems, and garment labels have been singled out after companies like Guess, have been shunned for their voluntary participation in the cruel work conditions that sweatshops have to offer. Once these sweatshop hiring American companies are unmasked, and the media has a field day with the coverage, things eventually calm down after the companies promise to pay workers what they are owed, and make a promise to pay more attention to their companies and who they hire to do their work. After that, everything seems to go back to normal in the world of Guess, Nike, Forever 21, and other companies that were unable to stay under the radar, but what is normal?
Organizations like United Students Against Sweatshops, and Green America Come Together, have banned together with their own separate members to end the use of sweatshops in the United States. Movies like, Made in L.A., help to bring the issue of American Sweatshops to the forefront of American consciousness. The idea behind the sweatshop focused movies, articles, and committees is to get the attention of consumers; if the consumers are forced to pay attention to this growing epidemic, that by law should be decreasing rather than increasing, they will stop buying the popular brands that cause the sweatshops to stay open. Well, the economy is in a recession and the brands that use the sweatshops carry the cheapest clothing labels, so the question still remains, are the garment labels worth it?
