Does All of Your Advertising Make This Classic Mistake?

Posted: Aug 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

In business, nothing is worse than having boring advertising. This is the number 1 mistake in all of advertising. When you create boring advertising, your prospects ignore your message and you lose money. Think about a student in middle-high school. The main reason students don't read a book, or doesn't want to read a book for a given assignment is that it is too boring!

This doesn't have to happen to you. To enliven your message, you can use attention-getting message that can drive sales and inspire more phone calls to your business.

Your advertising is not meant to be boring. Your advertising is meant to increase your sales and profits. And the only way to do that is to create advertising that piques the curiosity of your readers.

Now what I'm about to ask you requires a gut check, so you will have to bare with me here. Is the advertising that you're spending money on boring? Is your advertising filled with jargon that only your business friends understand? Are you mentioning your technical skills instead of addressing the needs and wants of your prospects? If you answered "yes" to all three of these questions, then more than likely your advertising is failing.

One of the worse mistakes you can make in business is to think that what's important to you is what's important your prospects - and you can never make this mistake. In your advertising, you want to mention benefits and features that are only important to your customers, not what's important to you.

People want what's in it for them, not what you think they should want. So it's important that you begin your advertising with proper market research - so that you can pinpoint exactly what your prospects are looking for.

People are concerned with their own problems, not yours. So address their needs and not your accolades. This is the best way to gain a receptive ear and to make all of your advertising work for you.

Remember these 5 little words: "What's In It For Me?" This is all your prospect is concerned with so you should make sure that your advertising is doing it's job of addressing their needs and wants.

You only have a few moments to get the attention of your prospect - only a few. So you should do your best to address their number 1 want right there in your headline, so that they can continue to read and explore your message. Your message's job is to get and keep people's interest, and this is something that boring advertising just cannot do.

Imagine if you were on TV and only had a few moments to get your message across. Your ad lies in the hands of a prospect with a remote control on their lap. If your ad doesn't do the job of inciting action from this person, then they will just turn the channel on you. You never want this to happen so it's important that you show your prospect something that is interesting and something that will benefit them immensely.

So if your prospects are bored, you get ignored. It's as simple as that. Keep these tips in mind when creating your next advertising campaign.

I've been a Business Consultant for twenty-five years teaching accountants and helping business owners make more money. My real focus, though, is not on the accounting industry, but on small business owners and how they can turn their operations into a cash cow OR how they can increase their income by ten-fold. Don't think that's possible? You know it actually can be done. I went through this drill as a little practice set with a strategic coach a few years ago in Canada.
