The Hon Company was founded in 1944 in Muscatine, Iowa. Originally, the company was called Home-O-Nize and elected to focus it's efforts on designing and selling kitchen freezers and metal kitchen cabinets. In 1955, Home-O-Nize also decided to migrate into the office furniture industry, so they created a separate office furniture division called H-O-N.
The Hon company saw a need for office organization so the first Hon file cabinet was produced in 1955 and was then called the "Unifile". The success of this cabinet model led to the development of other various cabinets including a variation of the filing cabinets that are seen still today.
