Most marriages in the USA end not too long after they begin. The unfortunate thing is, many couples (whether married or not) stay together long enough to have children together. Times are great at first - Mom, Dad and the kids are all happy. But then comes the split up - the divorce.
How do kids handle their parents splitting up?
Well, this is foreign territory to kids. Put yourself in their shoes. They were brought into a world where they were loved and cared for by both Mom and Dad - on a full-time basis. Now a divorce comes into the mix and they no longer have that comfort of seeing both parents together and taking care of them. It is confusing and scary for a child.
How can parents minimize the impact on their children
Look, there is going to be an impact. You will just have to accept that as part of the break up. However, one way to help comfort the children during this time is to let them know that both parents still love them very much and are always going to be there for them. Let them know that even when one parent happens to be away, they will always see that parent very soon. Nobody is going away for good.
Children need to know that they are loved and will continue to be loved. That is extremely impotent.
The best way to minimize the impact on the kids is to avoid splitting up. Of course, this can not always be the solution, but if there is any chance of reconciliation, then you really should try and make it work for the sake of the children.
