Abuse at home can come in numerous ways wether its bullying, or violence or other methods. It can happen to both men and women although men are reported to attack a women or wife more often than women attacking men.It may be due to the stigma associated with a stronger man in physical strength compared to that of a women.

In both cases abuse should not be tolerated but which is most often the case there is a stronghold between the two adults that is often misconstruded as love.

When  a woman suffers emotional abuse the partner often bullies and name calls at first to knock a womans self esteem, confidence, make her feel useless, unhappy unloved by anyone other than her partner from his point of view. Its not noticed as often at first then the woman can suddenly feel isolated, not wanting to go out, depressed etc.

The man likes to think he has power over a woman in this instance it makes him feel in control. Not always but sometimes this kind of bullying tactics can later develop into violence. The woman may feel that this man rescused her at first made her feel loved where family often fail to notice, then as the violence starts the woman may feel she has to cover up the incidents as the partner later tries to appologies.

In any case after a few ionstances a woman may still feel to be needy of her partner and in so deep feel that there is not escape. he may want to trap her spy on her so she no longer ventures outside feeling trapped.

it is at this stage you either stay, which one day may result in a death, or seek help.

There is all sorts of help out there if you find yourself in a similar position you can run  to a neighbour close by to tell, or use their telephone.Further down tha page you can find a whole list of useful websites of contacts and support for such abuse cases.

Sometimes the man takes control of the finances so the woman is left pennyless from day to day even so a 999 call is free from a public phone box if things get unbearable at home.

If you suffer abuse you may want to give your partner a few chances. Its up to you both to try to resolve matters before things get out of hand ie marriage guidance councelling, abuse councelling.

how it can help...

  • Couple counselling may help assess whether a relationship is abusive or just unbalanced.
  • Entrenched abuse is not a suitable subject for working on as a couple.
  • Individual counselling may be useful to the abused person, who may have difficulty detaching themselves from the partner’s behaviour.
  • Counselling may help restore self-esteem and re-examine healthy ways of relating.
  • Specialist agencies can offer support to perpetrators to examine their behaviour – counselling is not always appropriate for abusers.
  • In any form of abuse do not keep quiet tell someone in confidence as soon as possible.
