Internet marketing is a tool for global marketing. Through the help of the internet, businesses are presented using a larger market scope. Web marketing is also embraced by local business, however. Compared to traditional media marketing such as advertisements, online marketing is cheaper and more convenient. It also combines both technical and creative aspects.

Internet marketing includes web design, web development, advertising, and sales. It places media through different engagement cycles and correlates it with several business models. These business models are used to address the specific interests of the target market.

E-commerce is one of the business models associated with internet marketing, both locally and globally. E-commerce is simply trading products and services over the internet. Online transactions are enhanced by features such as internet banking and electronic fund transfer. The ability of the internet to promote supply chain management, inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems also help in the development of local business internet marketing.

Another associated business model to internet marketing is the affiliate marketing program. Affiliate programs are designed to promote and sell products through a separate group of sellers, called affiliates. The company hires affiliates to do the selling and in return, they are given a share in the profits. Affiliate marketing helps local internet marketing transition into a wider geographic coverage.

Local internet marketing is a general term for the marketing strategy that utilizes the potential of the internet to empower company visibility. It uses tools that target sales promotions and advertisement in a cost-effective way. Local internet marketing is classified into three different colored ‘hats.'

White hat internet marketing follows the correct practices and standards laid out by the search engines. On the opposite end of the spectrum, black hat marketing makes use of deceptive, abusive, and illegal practices to drive web traffic and product marketing. They use techniques such as spamming and redirecting clients to pages without their consent.  Meanwhile, neutral gray hat local internet marketing may also practice deceit through search engine optimization, though their methods are less severe and less disruptive than the black hats. It may not be easily detected by the search engine spiders, but other users can report them to search engine maintenance personnel and cause the website using gray hat techniques to be banned.
