Mervin Jones is an avid camper and has covered almost all the major camping grounds in Australia. His almost 20 years of experience reflects in the articles that he writes.
When choosing your trailer you should make sure it will last as it’s quite an investment. But for the avid camper it is a second home in the wild, so should reflect the owner’s personality. There are many camper trailer manufacturers in Australia, so finding the right one shouldn’t be a problem.
Some things to consider
Cost
Cost is the most important factor in narrowing down your choices. There are many lovely camper trailers in the second hand market and you just might find what you need.
Battery
Ask whether the camper has an onboard battery set up. How long will the battery last and how should you charge it? Also, what is the length of the cable you will need?
Beds
What is the size of the bed? Is it single or double? Where do the kids sleep? Can you leave the bed made up or do you have to fold it away every time you move away from the trailer?
Ball weight
Make sure the camper trailer you are buying has a suitable ball weight for your vehicle. Also, enquire if you can lift the front of the camper, as you might have to unhook and turn it round in case of an off-road condition. A general rule is to have 10 to 15 percent of the camper’s weight on the hitch.
Canvas
What kind of canvas is used for the trailer? Do I have to wet it down for the first time? If yes, then enquire why. It is good to get it sorted out with the manufacturers.
Vehicle and Trailer
Check whether the camper is compatible with your vehicle. It should not be too heavy for your vehicle and should be easily movable.
Customer Service
When considering the trailer, enquire about the after sales service provided by the company. Your trailer will go through many different conditions, so it is better to ask about the guarantee and warranty terms beforehand. Tambo Campers is a company that offers great camper trailers. Check them out at www.tambocampers.com.au
Other trappings
Some camper trailer companies offer various extras, at a cost of course, but it can be worth your while. Some off-road camper trailers come with boat racks, meshed gazebos, water tanks and awnings and also sometimes have extra rooms, which can be quite handy for groups.
Colour and Finish
You can get the campers to be customised to your requirements. Many campers want the trailers to match the vehicle, but very few companies do that. So, if that is what you want, then you should go for a company that provides such services.
Flooring
What kind of flooring is available? Is the floor off or on the ground? Also, in case it rains, will the water seep in? Do they have carpets for the indoors and outdoors?
Fridge
Ask if the trailer comes equipped with a fridge. If not, then enquire if there is space in case you want to install one.
Solar heaters
Some off-road camper trailers come with solar heaters that give you hot water and can help you charge your solar batteries too.
Insurance
Ask how much the insurance costs will be and will you be covered off road too.
Lighting
What are the lighting facilities and do they come with the vehicle? Does it have plugs and cigarette lighters so you can use your appliances? If yes, then what is the voltage?
Rear View
Will the camper prohibit your rear vision? If yes, then enquire if you need to use side mirrors?
Windows and Wheels
Ask about the number of windows available and if they are less, enquire if they can be increased to your liking. Also important are the wheels. Ask if you can get the trailer wheels to your specification or if you have to use the company provided wheels.
