Capacitive touch technology is the pricier cousin on resistive touch technology. Resistive touch panels are less expensive and have a shorter lifespan than capacitive panels. Most everyone has used a resistive touch screen panel without knowing it and perhaps we use them everyday either with our fingertips or with a stylus pen when buying a shirt at the mall or even a pack of gum at a convenience store.
It may have been several factors that ignited the capacitive touch screen but most likely, it was Apple that got a big portion of the world looking at the possibilities of touch. Apple blew us all away with the iPhone, the world got hooked on the touch screen technology and manufacturers are looking to the next year’s profits. According to iSuppli, a high tech information site, the iPhone contains a capacitive touch panel to make an average phone into a mini-wonder. This increased manufacturing of capacitive panel makers, making the capacitive panels less expensive then previously priced. Industry reps believe it could soon be the mainstream touch panel model. One publication stated that by 2012, touch screen panel revenue will surpass $4 billion dollars. Besides cell phones and credit card machines, capacitive sensors are found in
