Gloria is a phone geek who hates telemarketers and loves new gadgets.
In the past, if you had a telephone number and wanted to know who it belonged to, you would have to go your public library and locate their reverse phone directories. These directories, sometimes called greypages, would contain listings by phone number and give information about who owned the number and possibly their address. The only numbers they would not contain would be those whose owners had asked that their number remain unlisted. These unlisted numbers could be found in use by emergency services to help determine where an emergency call may have come from.
With the advent and proliferation of the internet, these searches became much easier and more convenient. You can easily find an online directory and look up someone’s phone number in a regular telephone number search. Many of these sites also allow you to do a reverse telephone lookup. The phone number is not the only information you can find on the internet, you can find addresses and other information as well. Most of the searches allow you to enter an address and find both the name of the owner and the phone number.
A majority of these search engines use spider searches to crawl across the web to find the information from public records and other directories. You may want to search on a couple of different directories to make sure the information is accurate. Even then, they may not all be up to date. Keep in mind that you may not be able to find numbers that are unlisted. There are some search sites that charge a fee for these services. Most of these sites can do much more than just help you find a name. Many of them will perform background checks and find other information on the individual.
For some time, cell phones offered a particular problem. The cell phone service providers often keep the numbers they service and the owner’s information as proprietary information and charge for its dissemination. This is slowly beginning to change, especially with the advent of opt-in cell phone directories. This is beginning to change, however. Many sites are allowing you to do a Free Cell Phone Trace. You may not be able to find the owners of all cell phones, but they are appearing in larger numbers.
