Antique door knobs make consistent statements of style in older homes, and they add an interesting touch to newer homes. Purchasing authentically old door knobs can pose problems, however. The door hardware may not work if it is too old, for example, or people’s fingers may even get stuck. Luckily, there are door knobs that look antique, but are actually new. And some people might not even know the difference between real antiques and the designer copies.
Since it can be difficult to find a full set of working antique door knobs for the whole house, manufacturers now produce beautiful copies of antique doorknobs. This door hardware is preferable because it’s easier to install, it will last longer, and it’s possible to find replacements if one breaks. There is a great variety of door knobs to choose from today that look very similar to authentic pieces from the 1950s, turn-of-century, Victorian era and many other popular periods.
There are some decisions that one should make before purchasing door hardware, such as whether the style should conform to the rest of the house, or simply coordinate with the door. There are also many materials to choose from, including brass, iron, wood and glass. There are antique door knobs in all of these popular materials, but finding them in an antique shop or flea market may prove impossible, especially a matching set. While it is possible to find one authentically antique doorknob to create a funky eclectic look, finding a set of old doorknobs to coordinate with the entire home may be impossible.
