Cleaners clean up awards

It has been revealed that the workers who are an integral part to communities nationwide have finally been given some acknowledgement.

Without such workers – many places would be shut down due to lack of health and safety rules and hygiene problems.

It is of course time for janitors and cleaning services to come into the spot light and take their award.

In Cambridgeshire, the region’s schools have been rewarded for their efforts at an inaugural award ceremony.

School caterers, cleaners, office cleaners and caretakers from Fenland were among those honoured at Cambridgeshire Catering and Cleaning Services’ (CCS) first annual awards.

CCS, which is part of Cambridgeshire County Council supplies catering, cleaning and caretaking services to schools in Cambridgeshire and other authorities and has achieved significant growth in meal numbers over the last 18 months.

The awards were presented at Shire Hall by County Council chairman Cllr Linda Oliver, and

were attended by the winners, head teachers and CCS staff.

The 10 out of 10 Award for helping to increase the take-up of school dinners was won by a school caterer at a Primary School, in Wisbech.

The caretaker at a Primary School, in Leverington, near Wisbech, claimed the Caretaking Employee of the Year title.

The School Employee of the Year award was won by school caterer at another School, in Wisbech.

Head of CCS Richard Ware said: “These awards recognise those individuals who have gone the extra mile in providing services to schools and the council, together with the energy and commitment they have shown in their work.”

The award ceremony has several aims. It not only encourages health and safety with a clean environment, but it also increase workers morale and makes them feel appreciated.

Sweeping up the nation

In similar news, a Lancashire school has also won a prize for cleanliness.

A Rawtenstall school has become one of the first in the county to earn a Cleaner Schools Award.

The award has been created by a Cleaning Company, which specialises in cleaning schools.

Cleaner schools have been prominent this year, especially with the outbreak of swine flu, which saw a third of pupils taking time off due to the virus.

The recent outbreak of E-Coli also hit the headlines, with concerns that children were being served unhealthy meat in their school dinners.

Such a hazard was highlighted after a five year old boy died in Wales, after his school dinner was infected with the germ.

An extensive inquiry by Professor Hugh Pennington found that while Bridgend butcher William

Tudor, who had supplied meat infected with E.coli O157 to 42 schools, bore the majority of the blame, Bridgend council’s environmental health officers had failed to halt shoddy practices at his plant.
