The internet has made it possible for small business to achieve the same amount of visibility as corporations that have been dominating the market for many years. Although there are many ways to establish your own place in a crowded market, many entrepreneurs try to ensure that their products are sufficiently unique and memorable when compared to those of their competitors. If you're not sure where your products stand from a consumer's perspective, you run the risk of making decisions that won't contribute to the success your company.

The need for a Competitive Product Positioning Map

Maps are wonderful tools. In the years before we had GPS systems and internet mapping services that would give you turn by turn directions to any destination in the world, people depended on maps to allow them to see where they were going within the greater context of the surrounding landscape. It's unfortunate that in the business world, there aren't any maps that will tell you exactly where you stand or where you're going. However, it can be possible to create your own positioning map to understand how well your products will perform in the marketplace.

What is a Competitive Product Positioning Map?

When considering a new product rollout or trying to decide where they need to focus their research and development dollars in the future, all companies need to conduct a competitive product positioning analysis exercise that allows them to know where their audience is coming from, and how well their competitors are meeting those needs already. The only problem is that few managers or department heads are trained in putting together an analytical document that will provide useful results and advice in this area.

This Competitive Product Positioning Map is an easy to download Microsoft Excel document that will enable you to devise a consistent process for evaluating the market and determine how well your company is performing in relations to your competitors. When you open this document you'll see columns that will allow you to document key buying criteria for each of your market segments, and analyze and rate your competitors. When you've filled in all of the necessary criteria, the tool will automatically generate a product positioning map that will show you competitive differentiation in the market, and demonstrate where you are positioned in the industry. With this tool, you can communicate opportunities or risks in the market, and allow senior management to make more informed decisions
