Consider A Retirement Business or Job

Posted: Jan 27, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

How do you picture retirement? Most older people, who approach retirement, say they will probably keep working. They may be planning to retire from their present job, but not from the work force.

For many people approaching the traditional retirement age, the thought of leaving all work behind them is out of the question. Older workers give a lot of reasons for planning to stay in the workforce.

The main reason people plan to keep working is pretty obvious. The older people worry that they do not have enough money to have a comfortable retirement. They may not have been able to save enough in the past. Lots of them did try to save. Economic problems or unemployment may have reduced those savings and investment accounts. Children did not get out of the house as quickly as planned. Sometimes grown children have been returning to their parents, and some of these grown children bring back their own children with them. Older workers figure they will have to work a few more years in order to provide security for their families and themselves.

For some people, working is not all about a paycheck. However, the older people still feel healthy and productive. Working has been an important part of their lives, and they do not want to leave it behind yet. They see no reason to quit working just because they celebrate another birthday milestone. These people have no plans to retire.

Many do plan to leave their current job or occupation at some point. Some people just want a chance to try another type of job, work on a more flexible schedule, or start the business they always dreamed about. Some plan to turn a part time business or hobby into a full time business when they leave their current job. You may wonder if retirement is a good time to start over in a new enterprise. However, for many older peope, there will never be a better time to realize an ambition.

There are actually quite a few self employment opportunities for people who want more flexible schedules. Some of these do not take a long time to train for or a lot of money to start. In most states, you can become an insurance agent by passing an exam. You can prepare for this exam by taking a short course over a few evenings or a week-end. You can also train to do book keeping in a few weeks. There are even many online classes you can take to prepare. These jobs can be done on a flexible schedule, do not require much money to start, and can be performed almost anywhere.

Many retirement jobs will use the skills and education you already have. Tutors can get paid very well, for example. The need for tutors is growing. If you are good at Algebra or play an instrument, you can probably earn a good income and get a flexible schedule.

Many people are eager to leave their current jobs, but not to leave the workforce. This may be the perfect time to quit your "day job" and explore other opportunities.
