Contractors- Capitalizing on the Green Initiative to Maximize Profit

With gas prices on the rise, home sales on the decline, and homeowners spending less and less on remodeling projects, the market is becoming more and more competitive for contractors/builders. While this presents new challenges for the construction industry, it also presents new opportunities for forward thinking companies. With more emphasis on the impact to the planet, the companies that are thinking in a "green" direction are the companies that are securing the contracts.

Let's face it, 10 companies can be bidding on the same project to frame a wall, run the electrical, install a window... whatever it might be. But how many companies are promoting Low-E windows and doors; low-VOC paint, cabinets, and flooring; good insulation; low-flow toilets and fixtures. By simply taking a look at the products that you are using and how you are using them can take you from a basic contractor, to an eco-friendly contractor. By simply adjusting your product sheet, you can have a significant affect on efficiency, sustainability, and healthy living which all leads to more money to your bottom line and more contracts.

So what is the easiest way to separate yourself from the pack? Start by getting certified. Certifications like CAPS will lead to awareness of spaces and comfort. The more people on your staff with CGR and CAPS certifications, the more prestigious your company appears. Not all of your clients are going to appreciate the certifications, but it will certianly pay off in the end.

Specializing is one area of "green" building is another easy way to separate yourself from the pack. If you can identify a unique quality or market for your business, you can then focus on promoting that unique indentifier. Any one can install windows, but if you promote your services as being able to reduce heat loss you can create a different market for yourself.

The key is to find a unique way to promote the services that you current provide, while at the same time satisfying market trends. By sticking with the basics and putting a current spin on marketing, you can easily separate yourself from the pack
