Does Your Business Present Risks And a Challenge?

Posted: May 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

No one ever stays the same. In both life and business, we either grow or go backwards.

And business is risky. It can be great fun and is definitely a challenge. The truth is everybody manages risks everyday. Knowing and managing your risks in business is the key to being successful.

I find that the very wide range of people reading my articles posed me a great challenge. I do my best to make it broadly interesting and useful but I must confess; it is challenging to be understood differently by different people.

A classic case was a recent article where I talked about controlling the use of sick leave, plus social media and mobile phones at work by using written company policies so that people had a clear understanding of the rules in that business. Several people contacted me - I was even called "un Australian" in one abusive email but I received a greater a greater number of emails full of praise and suggestions about what else should go into the policies.

I am becoming increasingly clear that I need to write to business and to people who know and support business people.

In life and also in business, you are either growing or going backwards.

Staying the same does not work unfortunately because no one else does.

And business is risky. It can be great fun and is definitely a challenge. The truth is everybody manages risks everyday. Knowing and managing your risks in business is the key to being successful.

Do you know the risks in your business and do you manage them? Are you aware that your employees and contractors can accidentally harm your business because you are not controlling them well enough?

You will discover how to identify and reduce your risks when you build systems with me to help you and it does not matter whether your biggest need is quality, safety or environmental, or even a mixture, the same basic approach works.

Clients who have worked with me tell me that they save time, reduce stress and increase profits when they have simple and effective systems.

That increase in available time and reduction of stress and drama is the big thing when you implement a certified system and you do NOT need to employ an extra person to do this for you. You can get this with or without certification provided you keep it up to date.

BUT the TWO big things about certification are: - Tomorrow walks in dressed as an auditor and you need to stop procrastinating because good intentions don't cut it, and - you get real credibility with a certified system and both the market and the regulators recognise this.

One of the great lessons I have learned is that it's easier for a third party to sell you than for you to sell yourself. When you sell yourself, it can come across as pushy whereas if someone positions you, especially when it is an international standard positioning you, you are given real credibility.

The key reason why some firms thrive while some implode during an financial recession is still a puzzle to many people business-owning business owners. Some wrongly assume that all businesses should suffer via recessionary cycles. But the truth is that some companies are usually essentially recession-proof, and it is not necessarily because they are much larger, better known, or a lot more generously capitalized.

We have heard about the dreadful human cost and the houses lost but spare a thought also for the businesses and the consequent jobs lost. They have not had a lot of publicity. The recovery may well take years. How many won't recover? STOP and think about YOUR emergency planning even for things you thought were totally unlikely.

2010 was the equal hottest year recorded since man began recording temperatures 1880 and also the wettest and this is in spite of the big freeze n the northern hemisphere. 2005 was the equal hottest. A hotter world causes more evaporation from land and oceans resulting in a warmer atmosphere that holds and releases more water. The result is more violent storms and 100 year events becoming 20 year events.

The anecdotal evidence is that 80% of small business owners don't prepare a business plan and even less actually run their business from a plan. And if you do, you almost certainly concentrate on your strengths and opportunities and gloss over your threats and weaknesses because the plan is largely focussed on convincing the bank you are a good risk. Did you actually stop and think about risk? But that's another story.

Why even think of putting new housing development in polluted industrial areas? Just where is industry supposed to move? And what on earth would this cost? Doesn't it occur to some people that we actually do need some industry in this country? It really is helpful in producing wealth and employing people.
