Make sure the plumber is licensed. A licensed plumber will have completed the right training and also carry the correct insurances. Rest assured, if anything goes wrong you will be covered. A good plumber should be able to give you a time of arrival. If they can’t, call someone else. Keep in mind though, that they will likely be busy particularly on weekends so be prepared to wait. If you are calling a plumber to repair storm damage, remember that they cannot even start work until the rain has stopped. This is dangerous and against workplace health and safety regulations.
In a normal situation you can ask family of friends for advice. In a situation where an emergency plumber is needed, it is likely you will not be able to do this. Good research skills come in handy here, jump on the internet and do a search. More than the actual homepages of plumbers, have a look for any review sites you can find. Testimonials from others have far more credibility than what people say about themselves.
