Facebook Addiction Disorder Symptoms… "Just a Minute Honey, I'm Checking My Facebook!"
Facebook has completely changed the idea of social networking and communication. With more than 500 million users it's hard to find people who are not on Facebook.
Facebook's extreme popularity plays on basic humanistic traits: curiosity and self-obsession. Facebook has become a trusted place for sharing your "everything" with friends or with the world. It has become an undeniable fact that Facebook has become part of today's lifestyle... and even an addiction!
Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD) is a term offered by U.S. phychologists for those who have a chronic and uncontrollable dependence on Facebook. To be diagnosed as a Facebook addict or a person who has a Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD) you must meet at least 2-3 of the following criteria for the last 6-8 months.
1. You can't go through your day without checking Facebook at least a handful of times. You often have multiple Facebook windows opened at the same time (3 opened windows is a FAD possible symptom, 5 and more opened windows is a serious threat and you should look into Facebook rehab).
2. You feel constant anxiety and obsessive thinking when you don't have access to a computer or a smartphone. If you have FAD, then most likely the reduction or cessation of Facebook will impair your social, personal or occupational functioning.
3. Your social or recreational activities are reduced due to your time spent on Facebook and clicking "attend" under your online events is the extent of your effort.
4. You need a minimum of 20 minutes just to scroll through the News Feed and another 20 minutes per new notification, message or friend request you have.
5. Your spouse and you have longer conversations on each other's Facebook wall's than you do in person.
6. If you're single, you send daily requests to various celebrities in hopes that they will be "in a relationship" with you.
7. You feel happier on the day that you got 16 friend requests, 1 message and 7 notifications, than you did during any of your childhood birthday parties.
8. You lose sleep because you stay up late playing around on Facebook and wake up in the middle of the night with the sudden urge to update your status.
9. When you meet new people, instead of asking what they like to do for fun, you ask whether or not they have a Facebook account. You proceed to ask them to add you; and, instead of the old "See you later!" you say "See you in Facebook!"
10. You change your status update at least 5 times a day, and probably write random nonsense that nobody cares about.
If you fit any 2 of these criteria, you may want to get checked for FAD. If you fit 3+ symptoms then it may be time for Facebook Rehab!
If you test positive for FAD, don't worry... WE ARE ALL FACEBOOK ADDICTS, TOO! :)
