Give Your Team the Ball with Your Mission and Vision
One of the most popular statements of basketball’s great, Michael Jordan, is his mantra ’give me the ball!’ His coach and his fellow players knew that when the tough situations came, Jordan was ready, eager, and confident of his effort. It is also what has made him a successful businessman. Smart businesses recognize the results of good teamwork. Though rarely defined in business journals, the successful business teams are out there. These employees had, early on, decided to buy into the existence of the business. What made this company’s service or product important to its marketplace? What did it offer that was lacking in other businesses? How could the employee make a difference? It is simple. They were given a clear understanding of their role in its success and also the tiered visions of fellow employee’s roles that help complete their own. Being given added expectations only served to enhance confidence in their teambuilding. This confidence comes in the “why” or purpose of the mission of the company, the desire to reach its vision and the understanding of the strategic actions that will achieve those statements.
Give your team the ball by being vision driven. Nothing can undermine a team faster than a lack of consistency, communication or logical basis for actions.
Novo Solutions, a pioneer in Internet consulting, then in its 6th year, began a process of realignment of its business focus. The business shift would now require a consensus of a staff of six, on new products and sales and change in the use of offsite developers.
“Using our mission and vision statements our staff meetings could begin to define where Novo was, where we wanted our market to be and more importantly , where we do not “ said Anne Sych, Novo’s Marketing Manager. “It became easier to define our market products and understand the cost of not operating a visionary market driven company.”
Sharing standards, increased initiatives and sense of purpose stimulates commitment and develops ownership of the goals. For a family owned and operated inn, teamwork was built on their mission statement; who they saw themselves as, how they would extend service to their guests and the results of a “satisfying and rewarding environment for guests, employees and owners.” Advancing “the ball” depended on a team vision for their inn and the specific strategies they would take action on.
Acknowledging your employees teamwork and their commitment to accomplish the goals they have set is vital. They will repay your confidence by tackling any glitches with the same mindset. Give your team the ball.
