Google’s $20 Million Charitable Donation

Tis the season of giving, so as a part of Google’s seemingly new tradition, they just announced that they will be donating $20 Million to charities. This year’s recipients are APC.org, ASHOKA, the Bharti Foundation, Connecting Up, Global Strategies for HIV Prevention, LASA, NatureBridge, NPTech, and NTEN, all of whom, will receive an equal lump sum. Google is a massive company which makes an astronomical amount of money, so donations are almost expected of them. By making donations, they gain a likeability and personability factor to people who see donating as a thoughtful act (which most people do).
This announcement sparked my interest because I am someone who believes in donating whenever possible, as well as volunteering. Although the purpose of donating is not to receive something or to benefit in return, there can be an underlying benefit for businesses (especially small, local businesses). Small businesses shouldn’t donate to charities just to benefit in return, but if they had plans to donate anyway, then why not add it to their SEO practices?
Instead of making a donation under the radar, let it be known. Add a banner to your website announcing that 30% of every purchase made during the holidays will be donated to the ASPCA, write a blog about deciding which charity to give to, and announce your donation plans on Facebook and Twitter. If you’re simply making a flat donation and you’re not getting customers or clients involved, then be careful not to brag about it. One announcement on each online location will do. If you’re choosing to get clients and customers involved, then announce it everywhere, and often. People love to make purchases that also contribute to charities, but sometimes it takes a couple reminders to get them to pull out their credit card.
Donating a percentage of sales is a great way to increase sales while also doing something good for your favorite charity. It’s the best of both worlds! Customers and clients will love seeing that your company has a heart and that you’re willing to act on it, even if you’re a small, local company. By writing a blog about the donation process, decision, or act, you will be boosting your SEO campaign. Google’s spiders crawl everywhere to search for updated blog pages, so writing blogs will help improve your search engine rankings. Similarly, by posting donation announcements on Facebook and Twitter, as well as on your website, you’ll appear to be a more ‘human’ company to people, instead of just a business with no human behind it.
It’s a win-win situation for your conscience, as well as your business! Google knows what they’re doing, so feel free to follow their lead and help out your favorite charity!
